Rio Dulce Weather Station

The Rio Dulce weather station is no longer operational.  But real-time conditions in several Guatemalan cities plus detailed weather and sea-state information and forecasts can be found here:

The instruments were occasionally producing erroneous readings such as a temperature of 81C or humidity of 110%. I wrote some C code to filter and pre-process the data before sending it up to the Wunderground server. We'll see if that fixes it.

So far, so good. The software I wrote last night to handle the occasional erroneous data readings seems to be working.

The temperature, humidity, and pressure measurements appear to be quite accurate. There has not been much wind to measure and there's been no rain yet to compare against a standard rain gauge. We'll see about those when the opportunity for a test comes.

Well it turns out there are some issues with Wunderground as well. According to the API it's okay to send incomplete data messages. In other words if you only send barometric pressure and wind speed but not the temperature, humidity, etc. that's supposed to be okay. But it's not. I've coded the software to eliminate erroneous data that comes from the weather station. If the temperature reading is wacky I don't send it to Wunderground. But it turns out that missing data sometimes causes Wunderground to produce wild values like -999 degrees F, even when I don't send any temperature reading. I've inspected the data packets so I know they're correct. So part of the problem is Wunderground's and I can't help that.
